FBI Says Russia Apps Are “Potential Counterintelligence Threats” 12/3/2019

The FBI, in a letter to Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, warned that apps developed in Russia, like FaceApp, could be “potential counterintelligence threats.” Axios has more on the story, including Schumer’s recommendation to delete these apps, but the part that stands out to me is this bit on Russia’s full ISP access:

The [Russian Federal Security Service] can remotely access all communications and servers on Russian networks without making a request to ISPs.

This isn’t surprising, but mixed with the news that Russia has passed a law forcing device manufactures to pre-install Russian made software on all sorts of devices — computers, phones, TVs — gives the Russian government full transparency of their citizen’s every conversation, their location history, health data, contacts, passwords, and virtually every thought. Terrifying.
