Time has announced Greta Thunberg, who made news a few months ago when she shamed world leaders at the UN for failing to take immediate action on climate change, as Person of the Year.
What a great choice. Thunberg began a School Strike for Climate in front of the Swedish Parliament a year ago and has inspired millions to get involved in fighting climate change.
She dislikes crowds; ignores small talk; and speaks in direct, uncomplicated sentences. She cannot be flattered or distracted. She is not impressed by other people’s celebrity, nor does she seem to have interest in her own growing fame. But these very qualities have helped make her a global sensation. Where others smile to cut the tension, Thunberg is withering. Where others speak the language of hope, Thunberg repeats the unassailable science: Oceans will rise. Cities will flood. Millions of people will suffer.
I like how Thunberg doesn’t give a shit about any of this. She just wants a future with a habitable Earth. I really hope she gets one. I really hope we’re not too late. People like Thunberg give me a little hope that we’ve still got a (small) chance. It’s just too bad that these kids have to give up their childhoods to save their futures.
